In February 2026, the book “Crafting Pontency: Sowa Rigpa Artisanship across the Himalayas” was released by Heidelberg Asian Studies Publishing (open access, soft and hard cover). The editors Barbara Gerke , Jan M. A. van der Valk , Tawni L. Tidwell & Calum Blaikie invite the audience to join this celebratory presentation, in which their metadisciplinary approach to writing the book will be discussed. It is conceived as a co-authored “monograph,” based on their long-term collaboration and the FWF-funded project “Potent Substances in Sowa Rigpa and Buddhist Ritual” (2018–2024) at the University of Vienna. They will discuss their varied voices based on their different academic and Sowa Rigpa backgrounds, the co-writing process, and the outcome — a tribute to the artisanship of Sowa Rigpa medical practitioners & their skills. The editors will further discuss their ethnographic and theoretical approaches to understand and analyze what potency (Tib. nus pa) means and how it is crafted in Sowa Rigpa.

The book launch & discussion are part of the HCCA (Histories and Cultures of Central Asia) Lecture Series at the Institute for Asian and African Studies at Humboldt Universität zu Berlin.

Join the book launch via Zoom of on Wednesday 29 April, 2026, 6-8 pm (CET)!
